Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), Composites Technology Program and the Utah Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) will host the second annual bridge breaking competition on April 10, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Campus, located at 3900 South 250 West in Salt Lake City.
“It is rewarding to be involved working with faculty from other colleges, industry experts and professional associations to put together this conference,” said Alan Done, SLCC interim composites program manager. “Competitions like this help to educate the public about training and career opportunities in the advanced material and processing industry. And students have a chance to build their skills and make real design decisions in competition.”
Students enrolled in advanced composites training from SLCC, Davis Applied Technology College, BYU and the University of Utah will be participating in the competition to demonstrate their skills to industry representatives, experts, guests and faculty, and get a chance to win a prize up to $200.00.
Advanced materials, such as carbon fiber and other composite materials are revolutionizing a variety of industries–everything from aerospace engineering and automobile construction to golfing, skiing and cycling equipment. As more products previously made from metal, wood or steel are converted to composites, companies with facilities in Utah such as Exelis (ITT), Janicki Industries, ATK, and Boeing have an increasing need for qualified composites technicians.
SLCC Composites Technology Training offers three courses for the certificate program that can be completed in as few as ten-weeks. As a growing key industry in the state of Utah, graduates have a large pool of companies to work for, especially in the aerospace and outdoor products industries.
