SLCC to Host Statewide Composites Competition


Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), Composites Technology Program and the Utah Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) will host the second annual bridge breaking competition on April 10, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Campus, located at 3900 South 250 West in Salt Lake City.

 “It is rewarding to be involved working with faculty from other colleges, industry experts and professional associations to put together this conference,” said Alan Done, SLCC interim composites program manager. “Competitions like this help to educate the public about training and career opportunities in the advanced material and processing industry. And students have a chance to build their skills and make real design decisions in competition.” 

 Students enrolled in advanced composites training from SLCC, Davis Applied Technology College, BYU and the University of Utah will be participating in the competition to demonstrate their skills to industry representatives, experts, guests and faculty, and get a chance to win a prize up to $200.00.   

 Advanced materials, such as carbon fiber and other composite materials are revolutionizing a variety of industries–everything from aerospace engineering and automobile construction to golfing, skiing and cycling equipment.  As more products previously made from metal, wood or steel are converted to composites, companies with facilities in Utah such as Exelis (ITT), Janicki Industries, ATK, and Boeing have an increasing need for qualified composites technicians. 

 SLCC Composites Technology Training offers three courses for the certificate program that can be completed in as few as ten-weeks. As a growing key industry in the state of Utah, graduates have a large pool of companies to work for, especially in the aerospace and outdoor products industries.

Salt Lake Community College’s Composites Technology Training offers a blended format of classroom instruction with hands-on projects, providing students with the knowledge to skillfully create, handle and process composites materials. Conveniently located in the heart of the Salt Lake Valley, the program is equipped with an advanced composites-specific laboratory.

 The Utah Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering is an international professional member society that provides information on new materials and processing technology through technical forums, journal publications, and books. As the only technical society encompassing all fields of endeavor in materials and processes, SAMPE provides a unique and valuable forum for scientists, engineers, and academicians.

The Center for Prior Learning Receives an Honorable Mention

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the  Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the  Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education  for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning.  Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)  allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. Board of Higher Ed names Gregory F. Peterson 9th SLCC President

The Utah Board of Higher Education unanimously selected Gregory F. Peterson, Ed.D., as the ninth president of Salt Lake Community College today, following an extensive national search. Peterson will assume the position on July 1, 2024, and succeeds Deneece G.
