The Power of Our Stories to Heal

The world has changed. As our communities and spaces diversify, our leadership skills need to evolve. Especially during this particularly challenging time in our nation and society, we need leaders who have skills that inspire our current and future students. Sara Jones will share her insight on validating our own personal stories – everyone has one! She’ll discuss how to blend our stories together to contribute to a community of inclusion. Finally, she’ll bring deeper understanding to how we use our stories to bridge the issues that divide us.

From Equity Talk to Equity Walk

If you didn’t join us for the first session, we would love to have you join us for the final session on Oct. 8. From Equity Talk to Equity Walk provides race-conscious guidance on designing and implementing effective campus change strategies that establish more expansive and equity-minded campus cultures.  Session one: Chapters 1-2 and Session two: Chapters 3-5. Contact facultydevelopment@slcc.edu for a copy of the book.  

 

Because Internet: Understand the New Rules of Language 

Oct. 13, 27 and Nov. 10

Many people think the internet is ruining language and writing abilities, but this learning community will show you that language and writing is more alive and dynamic than ever before! Learn to use the Writing Across the College Transparent Writing Assignment Template to turn your equity talk into an equity walk 


Equitable and Inclusive Teaching Practices online course 
Course begins this week and ends Nov. 20 
This online, facilitated course focuses on inclusive pedagogy and equity-minded teaching practices. This course should take approximately 2 hours per module for a total of 16 hours. Adjunct faculty will be compensated upon completion of the course.

Tech Tips for Teaching

Join Deidre Tyler for tech tips that promote sustainable development. In this new teaching environment, the questions that are asked are:   What can I do to create a learning environment that is sustainable?  What are some things that we can do in the educational environment that does not change each semester?  One theory that we will discuss Replacement, Amplification, and Transformation --RAT model.  The tools that we will discuss are hyperdocs, Ted-x talks, Break out rooms and reflection.

OLC Accelerate 2020 Virtual Conference

You are invited to attend VIRTUALLY the Online Learning Consortium's Accelerate 2020 conference. SLCC’s eLearning team has purchased an “unlimited” all campus pass to the eight-day conference. Sessions will be streamed live from the OLC national conference in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. You are welcome to view any session from wherever you are as your schedule allows. Registered participants also get access to recordings of all sessions, which will be available within 24 hours after each session concludes and are available for one year after the conference. Most sessions will be webcast via Zoom.  


The general high-level schedule of activities is available here — eLearning’s registration does NOT cover any pre-conference workshops. 


The detailed schedule of sessions is available here — click the STREAMED SESSIONS tab to view the sessions available virtually. Note that all session times in the online program are listed in EASTERN STANDARD TIME.

ACUE is excited to introduce a set of free resources — including videos and downloadable planning guides — that can be immediately put to use to benefit both faculty and their students. These practices are tailored for online teaching but are also relevant to the physical classroom.

SLCC Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement

Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002).     Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Before reporting to the embassy, he was detailed to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program. In Bogotá, Knowlton worked for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and in Hermosillo, Mexico, he worked for the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction.
