A ceremony celebrating the first phase of construction for new Instructional and Administration Building was held on Tuesday, August 7 at the project site. Salt Lake Community College officials, AJC architects and Oakland Construction project managers and workers were all on hand for the placing of the new building’s first steel beam.
The new building is slated for completion one year from today—in time for classes to start in Fall 2013. “I’m just thrilled to see things moving forward so well on this important and exciting project,” SLCC President Cynthia Bioteau said.
Jill Jones of AJC Architects was also pleased to see the progress up close. “To see how far Oakland has been able to come in such a short period of time has really been impressive—this is an aggressive schedule,” she said.
Oakland Construction project manager Blake Westbroek called the day a “big milestone” for the project. “We’re here celebrating the construction of the structural steel stage of this project. We wanted to get the many people involved with this building together. This is a nice way to say thanks to the crew that has been so hard-working—putting in a lot of overtime.”
Once complete, the 136,000 square foot facility will contain about 75,000 feet of classroom and student spaces—including more than 40,000 square feet for 40 ‘smart’ classrooms.
Working on a project that needed to perform such varied uses and that would house so many different people doing a diversity of things was particularly rewarding for the team of architects.
“From the beginning of the project, there has been an interesting collection of people we’ve been designing for in this building.” Jill Jones said. “We knew that we had to come up with a design solution for an array of people—from top administrators to teachers and students. And we’ve had a great collaborative process throughout and I think we’ll be able to make all groups happy.”
That’s good news for the 12,000 students, 1,000 faculty members, 250 visitors and vendors who are on the College’s Taylorsville Redwood Campus on any given school day.
