SLCC Wins 2012 Most Valuable Recycling Award

Salt Lake Community College has received the first-ever Utah Most Valuable Recycling Program award from the Recycling Coalition of Utah. Like the Stanley Cup, the Utah MVP award is a traveling trophy that is issued yearly. Unlike the Stanley Cup, this award is made from recycled materials.

SLCC received the award for its participation in the international RecycleMania campaign.

“This award speaks to the significant efforts undertaken to be ever more sustainable at Salt Lake Community College,” said SLCC recycling supervisor Troy Walker. “Winning this shows that we are one of the top recycling institutions in Utah and in the region. This recognition will only help us as we prepare to participate in RecycleMania again next year.”

RecycleMania is a national competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. To participate, colleges are ranked on the amount of recycling and trash collected each week over an eight-week period and are ranked according to per-capita recycling, recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and on generating the least amount of waste.

The College participates in RecycleMania because the program motivates students and staff to increase recycling efforts and reduce waste generation, to generate attention and support for campus recycling programs, and allows the institution to improve its recycling efforts by measuring and benchmarking recycling activity.

The College currently recycles at all 13 locations. 1,264 recycling bins are used everyday at SLCC campuses. The College has even expanded its recycling efforts to Cate Field and the Bruin Softball field—where coaches for the top-ranked programs are looking into discovering novel ways to recycle intercollegiate eligibility for their respective athletes.

Recognizing SLCC's 2025 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering

The Distinguished Faculty Lecturer is a recognition of quality work by one of Salt Lake Community College’s full-time faculty and a charge to develop that work over an academic year into a public presentation. A committee chosen by the Associate Provost for Learning Advancement selects the faculty lecturer each year. The lecture takes place in the spring. Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Andrew Vogt, PhD Associate Professor, Engineering Dr. Andrew Vogt’s teaching philosophy is guided by two principles, curiosity and efficiency.  “Curiosity leads us to study a topic and allows us to really understand the ins and outs of research, while efficiency is all about sustainability,” he says. Andrew describes curiosity as a pure, open-minded impulse to explore, such as the ease with which children learn new concepts with virtually no instruction. Efficiency adds maturity to that childlike impulse, creating structures and pathways for accomplishment.  Andrew’s work has alwa...
