Utah’s Promising Startups and Successful Growth Ventures

The Utah Small Business Development Center Network (SBDC) is pleased to announce eight small businesses that have been nominated for a small business award for their promising startup or growth ventures.  Nominated businesses are eligible to be selected for one of the 2012 Small Business Awards presented at the Rural Legislative Day each year.

All together, 32 jobs have been generated from the businesses selected for the nomination—representing service, restaurant, medical, retail, manufacturing, and high-tech industries.  The businesses include; Dittobug, an online wedding invitation design and printing service, PetZen Products, an Ogden-based manufacturer that promotes canine health and fitness with their uniquely designed “doggy” treadmill and The Forbidden Fruit, a home-grown caramel confections manufacturer and distributor based in Cleveland, Utah.

Through a network of business advisors and access to statewide and national resources available from the SBDC, recipients of the nomination have leveraged their business ventures through one-to-onecounseling, mentoring, and training opportunities to increase sales and access startup or growth funding.

Cow CampCatering, which provides authentic and gourmet dutch oven prepared meals has been nominated by the SBDC in Ephraim for their sustained growth over the last ten years.  Jim Yearsley, a retired cowboy and cattle breeder started Cow Camp Catering in 2002 to pursue his life-long dream. Cow Camp caters for private parties, government entities, large regional businesses, weddings and outdoor events throughout Utah, Idaho, and California.

“Jim is a real cowboy with sheer grit that offers a uniquely genuine service which has made Cow Camp Catering a great success,” said Alan Christensen, Director of the Ephraim SBDC.  “He enjoys serving others and has a knack for dutch oven cooking.”

Barbara Read, the founder of Essential Under T’s was selected from the SBDC in Orem for her dedication to see her business idea come to life and for it’s potential growth in the manufacturing and retail industries.   Despite having been diagnosed with Central Nervous System Vasculitis, which caused a short-term memory impairment, Read designed, prototyped and secured a $22,500 award through a Vocational Rehabilitation Grant.  The award is a significant milestone for Read’s journey as a first time entrepreneur—helping cover the much-needed costs associated with prototyping and manufacturing products during the first year of business.
