Meet Our Faculty: Ashten Watts

Ashten Watts

EMT instructor & Co-course Coordinator of the EMT/AEMT programs

School of Applied Technology and Technical Specialties

Institute of Public Safety

Teaches:

Basic Emergency Medical Technician Course (EMT) and the Advanced EMT course; HSEM 2300 and 2350

Number of years teaching at SLCC:

Almost 2 years

Undergraduate:

SLCC, planning on attending Dixie State University for my BSN

Why working at SLCC matters:

I have found that SLCC has one of the best EMT programs in the state, if not THE best, and I am honored to be a part of that.

Greatest professional challenge:

Learning how to teach students from all different backgrounds and experiences. We have students that come into this class with some healthcare or medical background and other students that come in with no medical background whatsoever.

Greatest professional accomplishment:

When I see students out in the field taking care of patients. And when they contact us after they take their national exam and they’ve passed. That always makes us, as the EMT staff, feel like we’ve done a good job for our students.

Advice for students or others:

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and to make mistakes. That’s how you learn and grow your knowledge base. It’s uncomfortable, but you will learn so much more.

Future plans:

Continuing to teach with SLCC’s EMT program and hopefully start getting our students ride-along spots and clinical rotations in an emergency room. Getting my nursing license and getting a job in an emergency room so I can expand my knowledge base about emergency medicine.

Family:

Mom, Dad and one brother with whom I love spending time

Hobbies:

When I have any spare time between my two jobs and school, I really like to listen to music, read books, play tennis, go to lunch with friends, take walks around my neighborhood, crafts, and writing in my journal.

The Center for Prior Learning Receives an Honorable Mention

Today, SLCC's Credit for Prior Learning department received an Honorable Mention from the  Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL ) and the  Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education  for its intentional approach and for expanding student options to receive credit for prior learning.  Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)  allows students to obtain college credit for knowledge and skills acquired outside of the traditional academic environment. This is exceptionally beneficial for adult learners, who, according to CAEL, have a 17% higher chance of graduating compared to those adults who don’t earn credits through prior learning programs. The CPL department at SLCC was created in 2020 and since then the volume of students served has grown as the department continues to expand. To be eligible for CPL, students must be working towards a degree, certificate, or apprenticeship. Director of Credit for Prior Learning at SLCC, Andrea Tipton, mentioned fee...
